It's a late but welcome homecoming for Marcus Björk. The 28-year-old defensive star has signed a long-term contract with Björklöven that extends through the 2028/29 season.
After nearly two seasons with Finnish Kärpät and previous adventures in the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Björk is now back where it all began. But this will actually be the first time he plays senior matches for his home club.
"The heart spoke," said Marcus Björk about the decision to return home to Umeå. It was a call from coach Per Kenttä that sparked curiosity, but it was the feeling for his hometown that sealed the decision.
Björk comes with impressive credentials: over 200 SHL matches with Örebro, Malmö, and Brynäs, 79 matches in Liiga with Kärpät, and 33 NHL matches from the 2022/23 season. That experience will be invaluable for Björklöven in the hunt for SHL promotion.
The 28-year-old defenseman made his debut in the Löven jersey already in the match against AIK on February 16. Although the debut did not result in points, it was symbolically powerful to see him in the black and yellow jersey.
With Marcus Björk on the roster, Björklöven's defense is significantly strengthened. His combination of physical strength, experience from top leagues, and hockey sense makes him a key player in the final stretch of the season.
Björk is the second major signing after Daniel Brodin, who has also made his debut and already delivered decisive goals. Together with a strong goaltending base and an offensive team, Björklöven appears to have all the pieces in place to take the step up to SHL.
Now all that remains is to deliver on the ice – and with Marcus Björk home in Umeå, everything feels possible for Löven.
